Curtis and The Kicks - Something's Wrong (1992 Rare Guitar Blues) @320

Curtis "Don't Hurt Us" Marlatt - "Master of the
Stratocaster" has been blowin' the blues now for well
over forty years. Aside from a couple forays into
Rock, R&B, or Jazz/Fusion, Marlatt has stayed pretty
much true to his roots- the Blues. Marlatt has been
fortunate to have rubbed elbows with and fronted such
bands in the past such as the Doors, The Grateful
Dead
, Steppin- Wolf, Steve Miller Band, Bruce
Springsteen
, Janice Joplin,The Allman Brothers and Dr.
John - just to name a few. However, since
rediscovering his roots with the Blues with his
rendition of "Curtis & The Kicks" 23 years ago, Curtis
has performed many concerts and blues festivals with
blues greats such as Albert King, Gatemouth Brown,
Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, Savoy Brown,
Junior Wells, Lucky Peterson, Joe Louis Walker, Robert
Cray, Anson Funderberg, Sam Meyer, Rod Piazza and many
more.

Originally Curtis is from Louisville, Kentucky and
graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA;
paid for by the GI Bill after spending 2 years in Viet
Nam (an experience which will be unfolded in his
up-and-coming book Capn' Zig Zag's Blues Band).
Marlatt has been the guitar slinger for such Blues
luminaries as Homesick James, Mitch Woods, Fenton
Robinson, James Harmon, Candy Kane, Mojo Buford,
Delbert McClinton & Marcia Ball. His band, Curtis &
The Kicks, also was the back-up band for the late
James "Thunderbird" Davis of Black Top Records
before"Thunderbird" fatally succumed of heart failure
on the Blues Saloon stage during Super Bowl weekend of
1991.

"Singer/guitarist Curtis Marlatt is undeniably
proficient..." -Living Blues Magazine

"...Good ensemble feel; very clean, melodic guitar;
good dynamics, nice overall feel...
Good writing. All in all, quite a good CD...definitely
a superior band." -Bruce Iglauer,
Alligator Records.

"Listening to Curtis' recent show at Stevie Ray's in
Louisville, his music has become
more sophisticated and complex with lots of jazz
influences-but still emotionally
based in the Blues. -Keith Clements, Louisville Music
News.

Curtis Marlatt is the best slide guitarist in the
South next to Duane Allman. -Cream Magazine

Curtis (or The Smokin' White Cat) now resides in the
Twin Cities area of Minnesota where he moved from
California six years go. He currently has five CD's
released on the Blue Bayou Records label and has just
released his sixth CD, on Blue Bayou Records, along
with Curtis Blake, as the Brothers Curtis, called Its
You Thats Got To Go. He also continues recording and
performing with his "baby", Curtis & The Kicks

Johnny Shines - Hey, Ba-Ba-Re-Bop! In Concert (1978 Guitar Blues) @224

Hey Ba-Ba-Re-Bop

Hey Ba-Ba-Re-Bop

  • Release Date: 1978
  • Genre: Blues
  • Label: Rounder
  • Total Time: 42:37

Review

Delta blues vocalist, guitarist and composer Johnny Shines hadn't yet encountered the physical difficulties that made his final years so troubling when he recorded the 13 selections on this CD. He could still sing and moan with intensity and passion, hold a crowd hypnotized with his remembrances and asides, and play with a mix of fury and charm. While the menu includes oft-performed chestnuts "Sweet Home Chicago," "Terraplane Blues" and "Milk Cow Blues," there wasn't anything staid or predictable about the way Shines ripped through the lyrics and presented the music. If you missed it the first time around, grab this one immediately. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Homesick James Williams - Chicago Slide Guitar Legend (1998 Very Rare Guitar Blues) @128

Reviewby Cub Koda

This 26-track overview brings together the early and impossibly rare tracks James recorded for imprints like Chance, Colt, USA and others, from his earliest efforts in 1952 into the mid-1960s before signing with Prestige and producing the Blues on the South Side album for them. The first 15 tracks are culled from his 1952 and 1953 sessions for Chance Records (including an alternate take of his first single, "Lonesome Old Train"), and some great harp work from Big Walter Horton on the instrumental "Williamson Shuffle." Along with the surviving Chance material are stray singles for USA (an uptown version of "Crossroads" featuring a droning sax section), Colt ("Set a Date"), UK Decca ("Got to Move"), Spivey ("Can't Hold Out") and a pair of sides shared with Sunnyland Slim ("Sunnyland/Homesick Special"). There are no real session dates or personnel information on here, and only scant liner notes only giving introductory information; the set also leaves off both sides of his 1960 Atomic H single and thus can't be a complete overview. But the music is just as fine as you could possibly ask for, grade-A Chicago blues chock full of raw slide guitar and Homesick's grainy vocals, making this the best overview of this artist's early work available on compact disc.

Strapps - Strapps (1976 Hard-Rock) @256

Strapps - Strapps

Strapps were the brain child of drummer Mick Underwood and Aussie singer/writer Ross Stagg. This 1976 debut release is produced by none other than Deep Purple's Roger Glover. What you get is a straight forward in-your-face set of mostly (average) hard rock songs that owe more to early Mott the Hoople than that of Deep Purple.
