Cowboy - Why Quit When You're Losing (CD Record)

Artist: Cowboy

Our ID: 15480

Cowboy "Why Quit When You're Losing" 2 LP Set on 1973 US issue Capricorn Records # 2CX 0121 stereo ..... ..... The gatefold jacket has some storage scuffings and ring wear, and overall is in good/good plus condition.....The vinyl has several light to medium scuffs and scratches, but played thru fine, and overall is in good to good plus condition.......I use Goldmine magazine's strict guidelines for rating records, and most dealers think I rate TOO hard!!!

While not exactly the house band for Phil Walden's Macon, GA-based Capricorn Records label, the members of the acoustic aggregate Cowboy — consisting of Scott Boyer (guitars/violin/vocals), Tommy Talton (guitars/vocals), Bill Pillmore (piano/guitar/fiddle/vocals), Tomm Wynn (drums/percussion), George Clark (bass), and Pete Lowalke (guitars/vocals/drums) — could be found on recordings by the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman (whom they regularly supported), Alex Taylor and Bonnie Bramlett. Their debut "Reach For The Sky" (1971) amply shows off their rural whimsy and substantial acoustic capacities. While their country-rock leanings are comparable to the Hearts & Flowers, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band or Pure Prairie League, they rely on their solid original material rather than adaptations and variations on traditional works and standards from the genre...

and a review :::: However, as the mini-hoedown "Honey Ain't Nowhere" proves, they dew drop in for some unquestionably bluegrass-inspired pickin'. The succinct "Amelia's Earache" and "Pick Your Nose" are both off-the-wall indulgences that nicely balance out the stunning "Beautiful Friend" and the mid-tempo rocker "Stick Together," which bears all the earmarks of an early-'70s Allman Brothers side. Similarly, "Rip & Snort" features a strong repetitive rhythm that is accentuated by the guitarists in a tandem lead similar to that of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Another recommended spin is the languid and laid-back "It's Time," as it wafts into a vibe reminiscent of Neil Young circa "After The Goldrush"(1970). Reach For The Sky (1971) is full of pleasurable, if not slightly pastoral, music that is recommended for inclined ears who likewise favor Southern rock..Full of laidback Southern charm, "5'll Getcha Ten" finds Cowboy further exploring the wonders of back-porch music. Strong songwriting abounds here, and cuts like "All My Friends," "Innocence Song" and "Please Be With Me," which caught the eye of Eric Clapton, all sport fine musicianship. A great album to kick back and relax to.
...This 2 LP set is the reissue of their first 2 LPS: Reach For The Sky & 5'll Getcha Ten ...titles : Opening, Livin' In The Country, Song Of Love And Peace, Amelia's Earache, Pick Your Nose, Pretty Friend, Everything Here, Stick Together, Use Your Situation, It's Time, Honey Ain't Nowhere, Rip & Snort, Josephione Beyond Compare, She Carries A Child, Hey There Babe, 5'll Getcha Ten, The Wonder, Shoestrings, Looking For You, Seven Four Tune, Right On Friend, All My Friends, Innocence Song, Please Be With Me (Features Duane Allman on Slide Dobro), What I Want Is You..Chuck Leavell also plays on 7 songs!!!....

John Németh feat. Junior Watson - Come And Get It

LINER NOTES FOR JOHN NEMETH “COME AND GET IT”
By Bob Margolin Senior Editor Blues Revue Magazine and guitarist for the late great Muddy Waters

“Out of the Blue” and “Old Soul” are the expressions that keep running through my mind as I listen to John Nemeth’s Come and Get It. If you hear these songs on the radio for the first time, you’ll presume you’re listening to one of the ‘50s Rhythm and Blues legends. If you know a lot about music, it will drive you nuts that you can’t identify the singer, because he must be one of the great ones. You hear vocalisms that remind you of Ray Charles or Junior Parker or Fats Domino, but it’s not them. So you’ll stop whatever you’re doing and wait ‘til the DJ tells you who’s singing. John WHO!?!

You’ll do what it takes to find out who John Nemeth is, and you’ll crack up when you find that he’s a young white man from Idaho and that this recording was made in the 21st Century. His demographics are ironic because this “Old Soul” has arrived “Out of the Blue,” not from a potato. John Nemeth is a natural-born Bluesman, and he proves it with every note he sings, shaping each one with emotion, taste and inspiration. As with the best singers, every phrase delivered is just right, neither over-sung nor under-powered. The subtle inflections and references to masterful singers bring fresh surprises with repeated listening. John Nemeth makes it sound easy.

I remember hearing Muddy Waters for the first time on the radio and being knocked out by the human Heaven and Hell in his voice. I was amazed that the slide guitar on the song was just as powerful, so it made sense when I found out it was Muddy playing it. In the same way, John’s expressive Blues harp playing answers his voice and fulfills his songs when he solos. As Muddy found a musical soul-mate in harp player Little Walter, John Nemeth has found one in celebrated contemporary Blues Guitarist Junior Watson. Junior stands out from the pack of today’s finest Blues guitar players, always revealing the essence of a song and crafting the perfect stylistic touch and tone. In 2004, Junior was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award for best Blues guitar player. The Blues World appreciates Junior, but nobody admires him more than other Blues guitar players. When he plays with John, they inspire each other, and one plus one equals way more than two.

John Nemeth, in addition to singing and playing so well, also found the fine players for this album, chose cover songs that showcase his depth, wrote original songs that stand proudly next to those covers, and arranged and produced this album. As with his vocal and harp performance, there’s no evident explanation for how he’s accomplished this, given his youth and today’s musical climate. It’s a gift from “Out of the Blue,” from and “Old Soul,” that he’s passing on to us. Come and Get It.

"Definitely one of the best club shows that I've ever seen. John Németh is simply the Blues artist that I feel is most deserving of more recognition. Check the man and his band out whenever you might get the chance."
Don "T-Bone" Erickson, Founding Editor of Blues Wax, 2004

"Boy! John Németh can really belt it out!"
Charlie Musslewhite, 2004

"I remember telling friends up North in '80 that they should go see Stevie Ray Vaughan, but they weren't impressed because he wasn't famous yet. It will give me great pleasure to say, "I told you so!" about John Németh. You'll see."
Bob Margolin, Blues Revue Magazine, Dec/Jan 2005

"Definitely one of the finest new artist performing Blues in the country today. Catch him now so you can say you saw him in the early years of his soon-to-be giant career!"
Greg Johnson, Blues Notes, 2004

"The show stealer of the afternoon was a vocalist with as many octaves as humanly possible or so it seemed. Either John Németh is one of the greatest vocalists in the world or this was the best performance of his life, or both. Write down his name, you will hear about him for many years to come."
Bob Horn, President, Washington Blues Society 2004

Bio
John Németh is a traditional Blues singer whose style resembles that of B.B. King, Ray Charles and Junior Parker. His decade long career has found him opening for Robert Cray, Keb Mo', and Earl Thomas. Performing major music festivals around the United States, Scandinavia, and Canada as both a featured artist of the Junior Watson Band and fronting his band the Jacks has brought him critical acclaim. The Cascade Blues Association selected Nemeth as a crowd favorite at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival in 2002, and the Washington Blues Society called him the show stealer at the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival in 2003. He is considered a topnotch harp blower. Greg Johnson of Blues Notes writes, "John Németh possesses rich harmonica tone that easily brings to mind Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter."

"Come And Get It" is Nemeth's latest release, and features the Junior Watson Band. The album has received rave reviews and is currently climbing the independent blues radio charts. Bob Margolin writes, "John Németh is a natural-born Bluesman, and he proves it with every note he sings, shaping each one with emotion, taste and inspiration. The subtle inflections and references to masterful singers bring fresh surprises with repeated listening."

Nick Moss & The Flip Tops - Count Your Blessings

*Nominated for "Best Conteporary Blues Album" 2004 W.C. Handy Awards!!!!!!

'Count Your Blessings' proves that Nick Moss' original
passion for the music and his drive to learn more and continually refine his technique remain undiminished.
- Justin O'Brien

Following up on his 2001 release, 'Got A New Plan', wasn't going to be an easy move for Nick Moss and his band, The Flip Tops. The wide-ranging critical acclaim for his last disc landed in blues publications on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and as far away as Japan and Australia with the general consensus echoing the idea that Moss could well be the future of blues. With 'Count Your Blessings', the votes shouldn't sway a peg. Nick Moss & The Flip Tops still consist of harrowing guitar and booming vocals courtesy of Moss, plus the tried-and-tested rhythm section of Andy Lester and Greg Campbell, and there are plenty of guests this time around as well. Nick's recent bride, Kate, handles additional guitar chores and Barrelhouse Chuck has become a full-time member, but adding the talents of Anson Funderburgh, Sam Myers, Lynwood Slim, Curtis Salgado, Johnny Bradley, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and Bob Stroger make the party an even bigger success than most should have expected. If one thing is immediately evident it's that there's more of a flat-out Chicago feel present on this new release due in part to the material as well as the congregation gathered to spread the gospel. Curtis Salgado's harmonica work is ridiculously good, and while that should come as no big surprise to those familiar with his work, it might cause some to wonder why he doesn't play anywhere near as much on his own discs. Nick's guitar and voice play perfect foil to each other; while his vocals are projected smoothly with plenty of feel, his guitar playing has the dirt and grime of Chicago's tenement neighborhoods, and the inclusion of Barrelhouse Chuck's keyboard abilities complement the outcome with heavy doses of Otis Spann, Sunnyland Slim, and other fallen Windy City heroes. Highlights over the first half of the CD are far too numerous to list but Heavy On My Mind exudes more Chicago grit than a Southside gutter, Do You Know is astounding with an infectious push-and-pull groove, I'm Mad features broomdusting guitar and two-fisted piano, and Porchlight sports a distinct funkified approach. A little better than the first half of the disc is made up of sharp originals while the second half pulls together Leroy Carr's Barrelhouse Woman, Floyd Jones' Ain't Times Hard, Big Bill Broonzy's Hey, Hey, A.C. Reed's This Little Voice, Sonny Boy II's She Brought Life Back To The Dead, and more, but there's no discernable difference between the Moss-penned items and the golden gems chosen as covers. Nick Moss & The Flip Tops are the real and raw deal, but don't take some reviewer's word for it, grab Count Your Blessings and find out for yourself! www.nickmoss.com has additional CDs, gigging schedules, t-shirts, gadgets, and all-around fun stuff.

Champion Jack Dupree - Back Home in New Orleans

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
This session was made during Dupree's long, long overdue return visit to his first blues turf. The seventy-nine-year-old Hamburg resident's fingers no longer drive the piano keys and his voice doesn't resonate as in years past, but the feeling is there in spades. His sincerity envelops songs about alcohol, paramours, life's downside, universal brotherhood-his words never come forth smug or perfunctory. Respectful New Orleans musicians aid and abet him on four tracks, with only Swedish guitarist Kenn Lending helping on the remaining half dozen. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Frank "Paris Slim" Goldwasser - Bluju

SIMPLY STUNNING: Parisian born Frank Goldwasser has put out the indy blues album of the year. His latest, "Bluju" is everything a record should be, inventive, truthful, filled with power and an absolutely exceptional level of musicianship. Frank, (known to many before as "Paris Slim") is an extraordinary talent. Still a young man, this brilliant guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and bandleader has been too little recognized nationwide with regard to his important contribution to West Coast Blues. 'Course it's kind of hard to get national exposure when living in a quiet Central California coastal town, however if there is any justice in this Year of the Blues, word of mouth ought to carry this blues revelation beyond this State of Confusion. With a solid background of playing regularly behind some of Oakland's greatest bluesmen (Sonny Rhodes, Lowell Fulsom, Cool Papa, Jimmy McCracklin, Percy Mayfield, Troyce Keys and a ton of others) for many years on many stages, he's currently out of the immediate blues spotlight, but "Bluju" might just change things for this deeply-soulful musician. With contributions by stellar musicians such as Kirk "Eli" Fletcher, Alex Schultz, Phillip Walker and J.J. Malone among others, (and informative liner notes by blues musicologist Dick Shurman), you won't fail to rave about "Bluju" once you give it a listen. --- Joseph Jordan, Southland Blues

----------------------------------------------------

"Bluju" liner notes by Dick Shurman

Frank Goldwasser is a man who wears humility more comfortably than pride, but his first CD under his given name is loaded with qualities that would make any blues artist proud. It's a tasty blend of skill, eclecticism, deep respect for the tradition and history of the music, originality, style, toughness and feeling. His own powers as a composer, singer and guitarist are beyond question, and he's joined by the guitar of Phillip Walker, J.J. Malone on piano and the tabla mastery of Souhail Kaspar (Kronos Quartet, Sting). "BLUJU" reflects a conscious effort to bring more than the classic blues elements into play, with the incorporation of African rhythms into several songs.

A cosmopolitan outlook on music should be no surprise for a native of Paris. Born there on January 6, 1960, his initial blues inspiration came from Hound Dog Taylor's "NATURAL BOOGIE" LP. After he worked his first professional job at age 21 in support of Sonny Rhodes, he accepted Rhodes' invitation to move to the San Francisco Bay Area. Arriving in 1982, he was hired by Troyce Key (who gave him the stage name of Paris Slim) to play in the house band at Key's legendary Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland. He eventually assumed leadership of the group while Key took a professional hiatus, and became deeply immersed in the area's still-vibrant blues scene, which he evokes nostalgically with Malone's help on "Three Sisters." He racked up three years touring with Jimmy McCracklin, as well as positive reviews for appearances at most of the prominent local venues with a distinguished roster of blues talent including Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield and Charlie Musselwhite. Four years after his first single was issued in 1984 on San Francisco's Backtrack label, his CD debut "BLUES FOR ESTHER" appeared, a strong outing which received a nomination from the prestigious W.C. Handy Awards. Its follow-up, "BLEEDIN' HEART", was co-produced with Joe Louis Walker, who guested along with Sonny Rhodes. An ongoing list of other sessions and frequent European touring (most prolifically as part of the Fedora Records house band behind Clay Hammond, Jimmy Dawkins, Homesick James and others) commenced before he moved to Southern California in 1998. Though his music has acquired considerable breadth, he still wants it to reflect the time and place where he honed it. "I was privileged to experience the Bay Area blues scene; I caught the tail end of it, when it was still a breathing, living thing. If somebody should listen to my stuff and hear an Oakland Blues thing in it, I'd be very pleased." He need have no fear. Whether it's the East Bay heritage reflected in his guitar style, the McCracklin musical trappings of "Feels Like Home," the Lowell Fulson composition "Back Door Key", Malone's piano playing or the atmospheric tribute "Three Sisters," the hallmarks of the Bay Area blues style and gritty club scene are one of the main cornerstones of "BLUJU."

This project germinated in fall, 1999, when L.A. impresario Rand Chortkoff was knocked out by Frank's work as a leader and sideman at one of his events. Chortkoff had a profile as organizer of a series of Little Walter tribute shows, and as the producer of well-received CDs by Billy Boy Arnold, Finis Tasby and King Ernest. Under his auspices, Goldwasser went into the studio in October 2000, with outstanding results. Having written the bulk of the songs, his chosen motifs run from no-frills Mississippi-Chicago stylings like "Well, Well, Josephine" and Jimmy Reed's "I'm A Love You", through the blends of those down home elements including Mississippi Delta-style slide guitar on "Homesick Blues" --- which utilizes a beat borrowed from a song by Somalian pop star Maryam Mursal --- and the Ali Farka Touré-inspired "Don't Take Away My Love", to the contemporary, radio-friendly compositions "Feels Like Home", and "I Can't Stand It", co-authored by drummer John Hanes and featuring Souhail Kaspar's scintillating tabla work. Elmore James' "Twelve Year Old Boy" is a blues waltz in 9/8 time, driven by John Hanes' propulsive, deft drumming and by Dave "Woody" Woodrow's idiomatic horn arrangement and tenor sax work. Goldwasser's fretted guitar work is adventurous and fluid, blending jazzy tinges with tortured West Side bends, achieving maximum impact thanks to a keen sense of blues history. "Well, Well, Josephine", with its elemental early Howlin' Wolf ambiance and manic Robert Nighthawk-inspired guitar solo, and the instrumental "Melba's Bump", with its shifting rhythms, are both about Goldwasser's cats (the woman metaphor of "Josephine" is no coincidence). On "Don't Take Away My Love", a desperate plea and an ode to a companion taken by cancer in 1989, Frank switches to an electro-acoustic mode, conjuring a tribal chant with the aid of hand percussions and a call-and-response between the vocals and bottleneck guitar. "Petit A Petit (L'Oiseau Fait Son Nid") [French for "Little By Little (The Bird Builds His Nest)], set to a New Orleans funk groove à la Neville Brothers, utilizes a series of metaphors to tell of a man's realization that "things ain't what they used to be" in his relationship. The chorus ("Oh, oui, y'a un joker dans ta vie") features a a catchy guitar hook originally written by Bay Area guitar great Lafayette Thomas. The title track, a rousing guitar duel between Goldwasser and Los Angeles guitar ace Alex Schultz, pays homage to the exotic grooves of Jimmy Dawkins' first album "FAST FINGERS". Rocking to a relaxed, syncopated boogaloo, it also suggests early Albert Collins. Gulf Coast blues giant Phillip Walker goes toe to toe with Goldwasser on a remake of the vintage instrumental "Playing In The Park," which he originally cut for the Elko label in the 1950's. Of his cameo appearance, Walker said: "I was honored to be asked to redo one of my old numbers with Slim. We had a blast!" With Walker leading off the way, the soloists go at it full steam ahead, eventually trading fours while the band lays down a rambunctious shuffle groove. Keyboardist Jim Calire gets in on the action with a raucous tenor sax break.

Goldwasser is a truly international figure in the contemporary blues world, rooted in both the Bay Area tradition which he adopted and mastered and his native Europe where his heart remains. His hope for "BLUJU" is that "it will sound fresh and appeal to people who normally listen to blues, but not just as a rehash or a recitation of what's already been done." Goldwasser's guitar playing aspires successfully to be "very traditionally oriented but with an openness and a certain amount of risk-taking that takes it outside the blues vocabulary." To his credit, "BLUJU" is certainly that and more: a significant accomplishment with obvious reverence for its diverse antecedents, and a finely wrought personal statement.
